Author/journalist Charles Duhigg recently wrote “Supercommunicators”. According to his research, we participate in one of three conversations:
- Practical (what’s this really about?)
- Emotional (how do we feel?)
- Social Identity (who are we?)
The key to connection in conversation is to ‘understand what others really want.
Let’s take a look at how we create more impactful and meaningful conversations, keep in mind three points above:
Pay Attention
Pay attention with what others are saying. Listen carefully, don’t interrupt whilst they tell their story and keep eye contact. Then reiterate back to them in your own words what you thought you’ve understood they’re saying. Eg: “So, what you’re saying is” and then say “am I right?”
This gives way for others to feel heard and shows you listened, builds greater connection.
Share Your Goals
Share your interests, goals, views, ideas. By sharing your goals with others, shifts the moment into a deeper paradigm. Builds rapport and develops a level of trust and understanding. Forging more meaningful engaging rich conversations.
Ask Curious Questions & Share
Show you’re interested in the person you’re interacting with. Ask them about their lives, such as bring some emotion to the conversation. Ask them what they like about their job, what impact do they think they’re making and how they feel about it?.” These are a few examples, when we add a dose of emotional influence, it changes the dynamic for the better.
Also, talk about your stories, and thoughts and how you feel about a particular topic or situation. Allow a bit of vulnerability to merge, keeping it real and light.
Gently Negotiate In Conversation
In every conversation we are negotiating, whether we’re aware of it or not – the exchange between two people is about, maintaining a balance of giving and receiving, back and forth. Sometimes we may not agree with the other person, and that’s okay too.
Remember it’s important to allow others to voice their opinion, thoughts and feelings and have yours heard too.
Keep communicating for better connections.
With Love, Ant x
