3 Keys To Shift from Thinking Self To Observing Self and Develop Greater Self Awareness
✨ Become The Witness Behind Thoughts
When we decide to shift our perspective from being in thoughts to the witness behind the thoughts, we become the observing self. The one that notices self-talk, how we feel, situations around us and our surroundings..
As soon as you move as the witness, you’re no longer attached or identified with thoughts and a situation, rather you turn the enquirer, uncovering truth of what’s going on.
To practice becoming the witness, grab a journal and write down thoughts, don’t worry about what you are writing, put pen to paper and allow the energy to come through by writing anything that arises.
Then review it, and cross out words that don’t serve you. keep crossing until you have a few words left. Then write down a statement that motivates you, such as “The witness is my power system.” Keep it with you and read it from time to time.
✨ Detach From The Story
Practicing as the observer, offers an opportunity to be more curious about what is underneath it all. The ‘story’ is what we decide to believe about what it is. However, when we shift into the observer – immediately we shift into the witness, reviewing the situation from the angle of non identification. Allowing a grandeur perspective, giving it space to ease and gently dissipate.
To practice detaching from the story, for example, when something comes up and you find yourself triggered and in looping thoughts. Take a deep breath and pause and say “I detach myself from the story and see everything with an open mind and heart, not judging. I let it gently wash through me.”
✨ Meditate Daily Ritual
Research shows that meditation helps mind and body bounce back from stress and stressful situations. It supports a calmer mindset, instills more clarity, which increases confidence. Body scan mindfulness meditation is particularly useful to develop the skill of noticing – noticing of your breath, bodily sensations, and learning to be more present.
To practice mindfulness body scan meditation, at the start while you’re cultivating this ritual, try it for 5 minutes a day. Best way to begin is to practice by listening to a guided body scan meditation practice. Insight Timer is an excellent app to use and it’s for free, you can download it on your iphone and listen to it on a daily basis. Give it a go and notice how you feel!
Enjoy becoming the observing empowered self.
